Meetings are open to all University faculty members.
Members present: David Gruber, Judi Misale, Gary Jones, Kathryn Brammal, Sylvia Macauley, Marc Becker, Amanda Jones, Jan Grow
1. Gary Jones reminded us of the University's January 24 planning conference, and requested a significant AAUP presence at this event. A lengthy critical discussion of assessment followed.
2. Gary Jones laid out AAUP's agenda for the spring semester:
a. Discussion of Truman's budget.
b. Recruitment of new AAUP members. Gary will ask for assistance with a membership drive; and Kathryn Brammal and Sylvia Macauley volunteered to serve on the committee.
c. University survey. Judi Misale will once again chair the committee for AAUP's annual university survey, with David Gruber and Marc Becker serving on the committee.
3. AAUP is having a regional leadership workshop in Kansas City on Saturday, February 24 (http://www.aaup.org/asccbc.htm), and local AAUP members are encouraged to attend.
4. Faculty grants. We discussed the process by which most of the faculty research grants go to the Science Division (23 of 36 funded proposals, with 92% of Science's proposals funded and only 37% of the proposals from the other divisions combined) and why so few people in some of the other divisions apply for these grants. It was agreed that this process needs to be evaluated, and it was recommended that this be done through normal university channels.
Meeting adjourned at 6:00.
