This last year has been a year like no other, and the Truman State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has been particularly active in advancing our shared interests as members of our community.
Over the course of the past year, we have advocated for faculty interests and concerns and realized some notable gains including:
- Convincing the administration to implement a mask mandate on campus.
- Encouraging faculty senate to establish a Covid task force to disseminate information and make policy recommendations.
- Meeting with president Sue Thomas and provost Janet Gooch to advocate for these and other issues of concern to the faculty
- Resisting revisions to Chapter Six of the Board of Governors handbook that significantly reduced the time that new faculty members would be advised of renewal of their positions.
- Advocating successfully for changes in the faculty handbook, including defending the rights of faculty to speak to the media as members of the university community on their areas of expertise.
We have also conducted a State of the University survey, the results of which are available on our webpage at https://aaup.truman.edu.
We have important work ahead of us for the next year, including protecting the interests of non-tenured and non-tenure track faculty, assuring that the administration implements an appropriate parental leave policy, and fighting for fair compensation for faculty, staff, and student workers.
Working together we can make Truman State University the type of place where we will all be proud to call our home. Please join us as we continue our efforts to advance faculty interests.
