Meetings are open to all University faculty members
Present: Martha Bartter, Marc Becker, Sally Cook, Keith Doubt,
Stephanie Fore, Ken Fountain, Jan Grow, David Gruber, Kathryn
Kuhlman, Tom Marshall, Joyce Ragland, and Peter Rolnick
1. Treasurer James Harmon distributed the financial report,
showing Assets at end of 1999 of $256.53, disbursements in January
2000 of $63.14, and a balance of $193.39.
2. President Keith Doubt distributed copies of Vice President
Garry Gordon’s written response to the AAUP Faculty Attrition
Report, a response that the Vice President compiled this week
for the Board of Governors. The Vice President used the information
that he had recently solicited from AAUP regarding the Attrition
Report. The Vice-President initially had said that he wanted this
information in order to do comparative studies with other universities
on faculty attrition. There was a discussion on whether to reply
to the Vice-President’s response and on whether the Vice-President
recognized faculty attrition as a serious issue. Doubt ended the
discussion by stating that, at the Board of Governors Meeting
the next morning (February 5, 2000), he would try to prepare a
positive view of AAUP and its Attrition Report for his scheduled
remarks and would not address the Vice President’s unexpected
reply.
3. James Harmon reported for the Ad Hoc Faculty Compensation
committee. The committee is examining schools between 2,000 and
l0,000 enrollment regarding faculty, compensation, benefits, cost
of living, to make comparisons. It was explained that in the past
there had been an attempt to establish a list of ten peer institutions
with an eye to developing comparisons of Truman with outside schools.
Missouri state schools were not considered comparable because
of our unique mission and highly selective status. Dave Gruber
noted that another reason for not considering other state schools
was that each is competing for same funds. Harmon reported that
the chair of the Ad Hoc committee is Dan Mandell. Four AAUP members
service on the committee: James Harmon, Martha Bartter, Joyce
Ragland, and Garry Jones, who holds a position on the committee
as its official AAUP representative.
4. Keith Doubt distributed AAUP brochures on fair university
policies for non-tenure track and part-time faculty. Sally Cook
reported her circumstances since voluntarily leaving a tenure
track position to teach half time because of family responsibilities.
Cook is presently concerned about working with a full-time load,
including service, while being paid as if on a part-time status.
