Meeting of the Truman State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
September 20, 2016, 4:30-5:30 PM, in MG1098
Present: Marc Becker (secretary), Mark Hatala (vice-president), Marc Rice (president), Taner Edis
- Presidential search—meeting with consultants. Question of what we want from a new president, of whether we need someone to raise money in Jeff City or support the liberal arts, and how it relates to unionization efforts. Concern that we won’t have much room for input into process of hiring candidates.
- Issue of salaries, and how salary increase is wiped out with health insurance increases. Uneven feelings across campus. Maybe a good opportunity now that Troy is gone, because he gave the impression that he was working for us and did not want to work with union representation.
- How do we gain support from faculty for any kind of push, either on interim president or for new regime?
- Examine issue of whether insurance premiums negate salary increase (Mark H).
- Should AAUP chapter be reactive or proactive?
- Do we involve new faculty?
- Or just tread water to keep organization alive so that we can reactive it when the need is greater?
- New opportunities with new governor and new president?
- Send out annual survey on salaries, with same questions as last time. Include issues of how insurance premiums undermine salary increase. Maybe add questions about new president:
- What qualities are most important in a new president?
- fundraising
- relationship with legislators in Jefferson City
- support for liberal arts & sciences mission [take this out because it is a given?]
- increase faculty and staff salaries
- support for sabbaticals
- support for travel to conferences
- being part of Truman and Kirksville community
- support for student research
- innovative ideas for modifying the LSP
- the candidate’s teaching and research skills
- What qualities are most important in a new president?
