Meetings are open to all University faculty members
Present: Marc Becker, Keith Doubt, Stephanie Fore, David Gruber,
James Harmon, and Peter Rolnick,
1. Treasurer’s Report Balance — $273.39. We just gained one
new member for a total of 42 members in the Truman AAUP Chapter.
2. President’s Report –The membership drive continues, distributing
flyers and newsletters in the Human Potential and Performance
Division, the Business Division, and the Math and Computer Science
Division, the Divisions in which AAUP is less popular. Extra flyers
and newsletter will be distributed a second time to the remaining
Divisions.
3. Old Business — State of the University Survey– It was
agreed to support Judi Misale’s efforts to undertake a third annual
State of the University Survey. There was discussion of the timing
of the AAUP Survey in relation to Teresa Heckert’s University
Survey. Judi has indicated that, given her circumstances, she
will undertake the Survey at the end of March. Four people volunteered
to help her with the work.
4. New Business — David Gruber raised the subject of the current
search for a History and Philosophy of Science Position, as a
point of information. The following points were made during the
discussion: (1) the low number of applicants for this search in
which the President Magruder’s son is a finalist, (2) the fact
that Professor Sue Magruder resigned her position in the Education
Division when her husband became Vice-President, (3) the recent
decision of the Board of Governors to create an oversight committee
to review hiring that might trigger the nepotism clause (4) the
Science Division’a attempt two years ago to hire President Magruder’s
son for a temporary position after Michael Tannenbaum, (5) the
legal advice of the University’s counsel, Warren Wells, to several
Divisions on the need to be legally vigilant during faculty hiring,
(6) the different ways throughout the University in which a faculty
applicant’s undergraduate and graduate transcripts are treated
in the hiring process, and (7) the observation that one applicant
will soon have two doctoral degrees, one in science and another
in philosophy and history of science.
5. There was discussion on the current activities and history
of the University Club, which is formally called the University
Faculty and Staff Club.
