January 2017 Minutes

Meeting of the Truman State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
January 17, 2017,
4:30-5:53 PM, in MG1098
Present: Marc Rice (president), Marc Becker (secretary), Mark Hatala (vice-president), Debra Cartwright, Neal McNabb, Paul Shapiro, Matteo Tornatore

  1. Need to connect with other campuses to respond with united voice to Gov. Greitan’s budget withholding and Rep. Rick Brattin’s bill to end tenure. We need to work together to defend education. Is there indeed a giant budget hole, or is this an excuse to attack education? We need to stand guard against that. Can we learn lessons from other places like Wisconsin that has been through these attacks on higher education?
  1. Marc Rice is sending letter to Index on behalf of AAUP defending freedom of expression.
  1. Discussion of longstanding issues of salary inequalities.
  1. Presidential search: Stakeholder group will be interviewing candidates, but there is little transparency or democracy in the process. We won’t know the president, and the president will not know us before arrival on campus.
