AAUP Truman chapter meeting, January 28, 2014

Attendance: Marc Rice, Marc Becker, Anton Daughters, Tim Farley, Wolfgang Hoeschele, Lily Lee, Sally West

1. AAUP Faculty Survey

This was a lunch meeting with boxed lunches, to discuss preliminary results from the AAUP survey. Marc Rice distributed the summary statistics from the 120 responses received by that morning, of the survey that is to remain active until Saturday, February 1. Results so far indicate that faculty find Truman faculty not to be competitive, and that Truman is not competitive in hiring new faculty, though it does a better job at retaining the faculty it has hired. There is a fair amount of trust in the administration, but far less in the board of governors. Faculty are not confident that the current “bubble” of faculty hired in the 1990s will be replaced in sufficient numbers once they retire. Close to 30% of respondents so far have actively searched for another job within the last 12 months, and only about a third have never looked for a job during their time at Truman. The implications of these preliminary findings, and possible ways to utilize this information in discussions with the administration were discussed in the meeting.

2. Delegates to AAUP Missouri Meeting

Two representatives of the chapter at the upcoming state-level AAUP meeting were voted at the end of the meeting: Marc Becker and Marc Rice will be representing the chapter.
