Meeting of the Truman State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
October 16, 2017, 3:30-4:30 PM, in BH100
Present: Marc Rice (president), Marc Becker (secretary), Mark Hatala (vice-president), Caleb Owen
- Rising insurance premiums. Makes it more difficult, particularly for non-tenure line faculty. Why don’t we have any input into these decisions? Why are faculty raises and insurance tied to staff
- Can we draft up a statement on the pros and cons of organizing a collective bargaining unit? Is it worth taking some initial steps? If we worked toward collective bargaining would people see us as doing more and therefore join us? Or do we need to first develop a dedicated core of people?
- Faculty emeriti office space. How many would actually use an office? We’ll look at existing offices and see what the situation looks like.
- Benefits for unpaid research leaves. Is it a question of being loyal to Truman?
A fundamental question on all of this is that we don’t have strong faculty advocacy, or working together as faculty. How are we formulating arguments for Jeff City so we don’t keep taking these cuts? A problem is that the schools are working against each other rather than together.
